Impress the guys/gals, and turn them to stone

medusa t-shirtHere’s a perfect storm of overlapping countercultural and alt references, wrapped up in one strange, retro-looking t-shirt featuring a portrait of Medusa.

The shirt is based on a painted photo from the gay French duo Pierre et Gilles, whose work you’ve probably seen either on album covers or through the music and fashion industries. (REM’s video for “Losing My Religion” was partially inspired by their work.) The model in the photo–it started out as a photo, before either Pierre or Gilles painted all over it–is Nina Hagen, an influential German punk rocker.

And if you don’t care about contemporary pop photography, music, or gender and identity politics, how about this: Nina Hagen did the voice of Sally in the German translation of Tim Burton’s “A Nightmare Before Christmas.”

Of course, you don’t have know any of that to appreciate the weird, formal sense of spookiness captured in the image. And now you can wear it on your chest.Pierre et Gilles Medusa T-Shirt at goreydetails.net (Price: about $20)
