Short Story: “I Am A Zombie Filled With Love”

Zombie Girlfriend“I Am a Zombie Filled With Love” is a really terrific short story by Isaac Marion. I like it because of how intensely it focuses on the sorry plight of the zombie. Yes, I wrote “plight”! Zombie rights today! Zombie rights now! Hold on, let me put down this placard and get back to “Filled With Love”…

We’ve heard theories before on why zombies eat flesh, or brains, or both, and this story expands on that a with more details: why he does it; what’s he’s thinking, in his dessicated brain, as he does it; what the physical act of eating entails for a half-rotten zombie. There’s a little bit of a drug addict angle to it.

And then, our listless, neuron-addict zombie falls in love, with a woman who “has no exposed bones or organs”:

Emily’s cloudy eyes widen at the sound, and she smiles. I also smile, and then maybe I’m a little nervous, because my tibia snaps, and I fall backwards into the dust. Emily just laughs, and it’s a choked, raw, lovely sound. She reaches down and helps me to my feet.
